Prayer is the act of talking to God; it can be a conversation from your heart. God seeks a relationship with us. Therefore, you can tell Him how grateful you are that He loves you. You may be thankful for what He gives you. You may also share with Him the matters that worry you. You do not have to use fancy words/phrases or repeat your words. God already knows your needs. He is looking for a sincere prayer from your heart. Be honest to Him; after all, He already knows all about you.
Jesus Himself gave an example of how you can pray to God;
So this is how you should pray: ‘Our Father in heaven, we pray that your name will always be kept holy. We pray that your kingdom will come— that what you want will be done here on earth, the same as in heaven. Give us the food we need for today. Forgive our sins, just as we have forgiven those who did wrong to us. Don’t let us be tempted, but save us from the Evil One.’ Mathew 6:9-13
This is not a prayer that you are obligated to pray. You can use this prayer, but also try to discover what topics there are in this prayer. So, you can use these in your personal prayer. For example, remember what things you are thankful for, about trust, and about the areas in life where you need help.
Do I have to pray at fixed times?
No. God is not asking you to pray at specific times. It is a good habit to pray regularly, for example, when you wake up in the morning and before sleep at nighttime. However, you can pray all through the day. For example, when you are thankful for something or need help or wisdom.
Do I have to clean myself before praying?
You can pray to God at any time. You can speak to God in your mind or from your lips; you may also stand or sit and take some time to speak to God. Washing is not necessary because God has already (spiritually) cleansed you through His Son, Jesus Christ.
Are there certain customs in prayer?
Most of all, God asks you to pray in all sincerity. You can kneel when you pray to show your respect for God, but it is not required. You can close your eyes to avoid distractions from your surroundings. You do not have to use special or difficult words either. Most importantly, speak from your heart in any language – God hears all.
Can everyone pray?
God listens to every person who is speaking to Him. Whether you are poor or rich, young or old, woman or man. To God, every person is equal; He loves everyone and listens to their prayers.
In what language should I pray?
You can talk to God without fancy words or fixed phrases; instead, pray in your own language, and speak to Him from your heart.
Are there fixed prayers?
God loves us and is looking for a relationship with us. How then would He like us to pray the same words over and over again? When you are married, you don’t tell your wife the same words every day, do you? It is the same way with God. He wants to hear from us what is on our minds. The things we are thankful for and the matters that worry us. If you trust God, you will notice that He cares for us.
Will I get an answer to my prayers?
It doesn’t always happen that you will get an instant answer from God. But I can say from my experience that God certainly makes it clear that He is listening. Sometimes my problems are solved in an extraordinary way. Sometimes I find the answer in a chapter I am reading from the Bible. Sometimes you may have to be patient. Many times, though, that is because God is working on you at that point. Just as a father may not always give what a child asks for, still, he ensures the child gets what he/she needs.
