Can God die?
In the Bible, there is much told about Jesus Christ. He has been God Himself coming to earth as a human being. He died in order to carry the punishment for our sins. Every person who repents for their sinful behavior and who believes that Jesus died for these sins, no longer has to bear the burden themselves. Because of the death of Jesus, forgiveness by God is made possible.
But how could it be possible for God to die? Who has been running the universe in the meantime?
The answer to this question is found in the essence of God. The Bible describes the 3 persons who are part of God. You can learn more about this in the article at the end of this page.
God is one, but at the same time He is also three different persons. This is hard for us to understand because we are unable to visualise it. Humans have a spirit soul and body. Together they form our humanity. God is not limited to a body, instead He is present everywhere.
For the fulfillment of His plan of salvation, God Himself became human. The apostle John describes it like this in his Gospel:
The Word became a man and lived among us. We saw his divine greatness—the greatness that belongs to the only Son of the Father. The Word was full of grace and truth. John 1:14
God’s Word became human. His name was Jesus. He lived as a human being like any other person here on earth. But He lived precisely as God intended and did not commit any sin. He experienced temptations just like we do, but He did not give in to them. This enabled Him to die for our sins and mistakes. The human Jesus died for us on the cross. There He gave His spirit…
And Jesus, crying out with a loud voice, said, “Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit!” Having said this, He breathed His last. Luke 23:46
At that time, the human body of Jesus died on the cross. It was not that God (the Father) also died thereby. God showed by this that He had paid the penalty for our sins. We were supposed to die for our sinful and rebellious behavior. Jesus sacrificed Himself for us by dying in our place. We ourselves are incapable of making up for our sins and disobedience towards God.
After 3 days He rose from the grave. By doing this, He showed that He is more powerful than death and that He has paid for the penalty of our sins. This fulfilled many of the prophets prophecies.
Jesus said to them, “It is written that the Messiah would be killed and rise from death on the third day. Luke 24:46
